ENGLISH
Below are some top tips for ways in which you can help your child develop their spoken and written english. In addition, there are also links to past SATS papers to help test your child's understanding and competency.
Top tips for boosting your child's English skills
Reading
Reading is the most effective way to develop your child's english competency. Whether its Writing, Reading or Speaking, opening a book and sharing some reading time with your child every night will have a massive boost on their attainment!
Get them to read pages aloud, discuss what they've just read, read to them, ask them about words in the text...the variation of skills they can develop is endless.
30 minutes spent Reading with your child every night will have a huge impact on their focus in English lessons, attitude to reading, and their English development.
Writing
In addition to developing their writing through reading, you can also set them creative writing tasks. These can be found in many 'creative writing' books that could be bought from any good book store.
Here are just some ideas for creative writing tasks your child could complete to develop their creativity, imagination, and writing skills:
- Create an advert for a local football team.
- Write a balanced argument explaining why people should play video games.
- Write a speech in role, motivating your friends as a sports captain, encouraging children to learn as a schoolteacher, or leading your people as Henry 8th!
- Create a poem about one of our MEP values.
- Write a letter to their favourite celebrity.
- Write a narrative (story) set in school - what wild thing could happen on a school day?
- Write a newspaper article about a school event.
- Write up an interview with their favourite YouTuber.
Speaking
Having good levels of spoken English is vital, with it being one of the most spoken languages in the world. It is imperative that your child develops their English speaking both in and outside of school. Reading English books aloud, speaking to them in English and asking them to converse in English will have a huge impact on their ability to read, write and speak the language!
